Scouting For Food Starts Saturday

Hello Pack 112!

Our annual service project, Scouting for Food, starts this weekend. This is a National effort put on by BSA units across the country, and raises a lot of food items for local food banks. Our efforts will help the Second Harvest Food Bank of the Big Bend.

The Pack will distribute bags this Saturday, starting at 9am. For complete info, see our Scouting for Food page.

Troop 117 traditionally picks up the donated food the following week. In the past few years, the Pack has chipped in to help collect as well, but do not feel obligated to do so. Both events last about an hour.

Remember to wear your full Field (Class A) uniform.

Pinewood Derby Updates and Info

Update Number 1
All cars that are entered in the Derby on Sunday will race. The top three cars at each rank (Tiger, Wolf, Bear, Webelos I, Webelos II) will be awarded trophies on Monday night at the Pack Meeting and advance to the Council races in April.

We will have a panel of judges examine the remainder of the cars - cars that have not already received trophies - and award the Show Car awards. Once again, all the awards will be given out on Monday night's Pack Meeting.

Our goal is to ensure that as many of the boys as possible are recognized with an award, and to make sure that the fastest cars from the Pack advance to Council.

Mr. Cullars, Mr. Daniels, and myself discussed these rules and feel that this is the cleanest way to make sure that everyone gets a fair opportunity to a) race at Council, and b) receive an award.

I know that all the boys have worked very hard on their cars and I know that everyone is going to have a great time!

Update Number 2
Mr. Gary White has offered to do a last-minute emergency Cut and Sand at his house on Friday night from 6pm to 7pm. His house is located at 131 Patale Drive, 32317.

He will be there working the saw, and should be able to help anyone who has not been able to get a car cut yet.

Update Number 3
The track will be open on Saturday, 23 JAN, from 2pm to 3:30pm for a car test and weigh in. This will happen at the Derby location at the Florida Baptist Children's Home:

Once again, from 2pm to 3:30pm on SATURDAY, you can bring your car out to the track test and weigh in at the Children's home. If you have already tested your car, you do not need to come out to this event - it is primarily for the boys that cut cars on Monday night. We will have
weights available there.

This will be the last window to check the car on the track prior to the Derby on Sunday! Sunday! SUNDAY!

Committee Meeting this Thursday

While not nearly as exciting as Pinewood Derby... our monthly committee
meeting is this Thursday night, 6:30pm at the Church. All parents are
invited to attend.

We will be discussion the upcoming calendar, Den progress toward rank,
February camping, and our Blue and Gold banquet. If you have something
else that you would like on the Agenda, please let me know.

Sunday! Sunday! SUNDAY! Pinewood Derby is Here!

Who: All Pack 112 Scouts are Invited
What: Pack 112 2010 Pinewood Derby Races
Where: Florida Baptist Children's Home
When: Sunday, January 24th, Beginning at 1 PM.

Check in starts at 1 PM on Sunday and will close at 2:25 PM for all
racers and show car participants.

We will start races at 2:30 PM for all Webelos II followed by the Webelos I.

We will start Bear races at 3:05 PM.

We will start the Wolf races at 3:35 PM.

We will start the Tigers races at 4:30 PM.

Family racing will commence when the Tigers finish.

The boys can only enter their car in one of the two categories. They may
enter their car as either a racing car or a show car. No one may enter
both categories (even with separate cars). Show cars can be entered into
one of the following five show car themes:

Most Patriotic
Best Sports Theme
Best Cub Scout Theme
Most Creative
Judges Choice

There will be popcorn and sodas for sale.

Please note that all cars except for those that will be run in the
family race must conform to the official Suwanee River Area Council
Pinewood Derby rules. Please see attached rules for more information.

Each car will be weighed in and measured to ensure compliance with these
rules. Families are encouraged to come early and help cheer the boys on
and also be present in case we run early on our schedule. Awards will be
given to the top 3 racers in each den as well as one award for each of
the show car themes. Awards will be awarded at the Pack meeting on
Monday the 25th.

Winners are eligible to race in the council race on April 17, 2010 at
Governors Square Mall.

I wish the best of luck to each participant and I look forward to seeing
everyone there. It will be fun!

Field Day is rescheduled!

Due to the 100% chance of rain and thunderstorms on Saturday, we are moving Field Day to this Sunday, 22 Nov 09. Same time (2pm), same place (Alford Greenway, at the south end of Pedrick Road), same agenda.

The weather for Sunday looks much better. Sorry about the switch, but we decided it was better to reschedule it now than cancel it altogether on Saturday afternoon.

Camping this Weekend! - Cordele, Ga. [UPDATE]

Hello Pack 112!

It would appear that Fall has finally arrived, and with it comes our first Pack Camping Trip of the year. We are headed to Georgia Veteran's Memorial State Park near Cordele, Georgia. Pack activities start on Saturday morning, but most folks will drive up on Friday afternoon. The Park is located at:

The park is hosting an extensive Veteran's Day celebration this weekend, to include a WWII living history display and model airplane fly in. The Pack will be hosting a Pack Meal on Saturday night to include hamburgers, hot dogs and all the fixin's... so bring your appetite. There are rumors of chili and cobbler as well. Afterwards, we will have our Campfire program.

During the day on Saturday, we spend some time at the Park Veteran's Day celebration, and we will also have some games for the boys to play. I know we will make time for at least one hike on the park trails. Webelos will have an opportunity to work on their Outdoorsman Activity Badge.

Remember... all Scouts need their Field Uniform (Class A Blue/Khaki).

We still have two camping spots available at a cost of $30 for the weekend, so if you wish to come along, there is still time! Contact your Den Leader for more information.

Pack 112 T-Shirt and Apparel Orders

It's t-shirt and sweatshirt time again!

This year we are ordering t-shirts on a pre-order basis. If you want a new t-shirt or a hooded sweatshirt, now is the time. We are also offering some really nice looking embroidered polo shirts, Columbia fleece vests, and baseball caps.

Here are the prices:

Here is the Order Form. The order form has pictures of all the designs and garments. We can also custom embroider a name on the back of a cap for an additional $5.

We will be taking orders until October 29th, so hurry and get yours in. We won't be ordering extra shirts this year, so if you want one be sure pre-order!

It's the Final Week of Popcorn!

It's the home stretch!

Let's start getting those sales into MyScoutPopcorn.com! We haven't moved the total at all in over a week - we're still sitting at just about 50% of our goal.

We have a week of selling left, so this is it! Sell that Popcorn!

I will be at the storage unit to check out Popcorn on Wednesday at 5:30 for about half an hour. Please met me know if you are coming. I think I have a little of everything left except the Butter Light Microwave - it's all been checked out.

Next Monday, the 26th, is our Pack Popcorn Settlement. We will be starting around 5:30pm at the Church, and will be working through the Pack Meeting (with a few exceptions). All money and popcorn that you need to return are due that night. This is *very* important. You should also bring your Scout's prize selection so we can get that ordered.

I have some info that a lot of you may not know about regarding our web presence.

CALENDAR
I've recently discovered that a lot of folks don't realize that we have an online calendar for the Pack. You can view the calendar on the web site by either clicking 'Calendar' in the left menu, or by going straight to this link: http://tallyscouts.com/p112_website/calendar.asp

Also, since this is a Google Calendar, you can get directly to the public calendar by using this address: http://www.google.com/calendar/embed?src=tallyscouts%40gmail.com&ctz=America/New_York

If you have a Google account (free), you can link this calendar with your personal calendar, and you can also import the calendar to Outlook, etc.

HOWEVER... This calendar is edited from time to time to reflect schedule changes, so if you import it, and we change it, you will have to import it again. There are ways to synchronize the calendar, and if you want to know more about that, talk to one of our many tech-savvy leaders.

Your best bet is to bookmark the Tallyscouts.com website, and use the calendar there.

Pack Camping Season Approaches!

That's right folks, the weather is getting cooler, and it's time to pack the tents and head for the great outdoors!

Pack 112 has three great camping trips coming up in the next few months, starting with Cub Family Weekend on October 23-25. This event is a great Council campout that is targeted at Cub Scout families. There will be lots of activities including BB Gun shooting, archery, and other fun stuff. If you've never camped before this is a great time and place to start. The boys *always* have a great time.

Cub Family Weekend is a Council event, not a Pack function, so the info is hosted on the Council website. Click here to find out more, including how to register!

After Cub Family Weekend, we have our first Pack 112 Family Campout the weekend of November 6-8. This trip will be to Veteran's Memorial State Park in Cordele, Georgia. There will be a lot of fun activites going on for Veteran's Day, including a living history camp, model airplane fly in, and other great stuff to do. The Pack is reserving camp sites (they are going to run out) so if you want to go, you need to contact Mr. Daniels or Mr. Merrick ASAP.

Finally, we have our New Years Winter Camp the weekend of January 1-3, 2010. This trip will be to Jellystone Campground in Madison, Florida. We will have some games and activities for the kids, and plenty of time for them to be 'boys' and adults to try and relax. We have a group site reserved for this trip, so we will be camping together. More info will be coming shortly as we finalize plans.

For all of our camping trips, including Cub Family Weekend, the Pack provides a meal on Saturday night. The menu varies, but no one *ever* goes hungry.

We have more opportunities in late Winter and Spring, as well. All our trips are already on the Pack Calendar.

Scouting is at its best outside. That's why we camp as much as we do; we firmly believe the boys get more out of the program when they are outside, doing fun activities than they could ever gain in an indoor meeting.

To help kick off the year, and to introduce our new families (and our old) to Cub Scout Camping with Pack 112, we will host "Cub Scout Camping for Families" next Monday night, (5 October), at the church. This presentation will introduce parents and families to what they can expect while camping, as well as the gear needed, and how it all fits into the Cub Scout program.

Popcorn Checkout Dates

There will be popcorn checkout available this Wednesday, September 30th, from 5:30pm to 6:30pm at the Storage Unit. The unit is located at US Storage, 1406 Capital Circle NE, Unit R1.

I may be able to find some time this weekend as well, but that will have to wait for now.

If you need popcorn to sell, come get it!

It's that time of year again! Popcorn arrives today!

We are hosting three (!) separate Show and Sell events this weekend to kick off our Annual sale. If you would like to work, it's not too late, just get in touch with your Den Leader or Mr. Merrick. They will tell you when and where!

This sale is very important, as we hope to raise most of the money we need to operate the Pack for 2009-2010.

Bobcast Saturday

This coming Saturday is our first ever Bobcat Saturday.
What is Bobcat Saturday?
Bobcat Saturday is a way to for Pack families to donate Scout items that are no longer used to the Pack. The Pack will turn around and sell them on Bobcat Saturday to families that may need some new Cub Scout shorts or an Activity t-shirt (old Class B).

Cub Scout Den Leader Training

We have scheduled the first round of Den Leader trainings for this coming Saturday, September 12 beginning at 1:00.

Here is a description of the trainings:
Tiger Cub den leaders, Cub Scout den leaders, Webelos den leaders, Cubmasters, and pack committee members can complete this training in one day or two or three evenings. The leader is considered trained upon completion of This Is Scouting and the Leader Specific training for that position.

Welcome Back Picnic

Hello Pack 112! It's time to kick off the year with our annual Welcome Back Picnic.

The event is this Saturday, the 29th, at Maclay Gardens State Park. Activities start at 1pm and will end at 3pm.

There will be Fried Chicken and pot luck style side dishes, so I'm sure everyone will have plenty of food. The Pack will provide drinks, chicken, and paper goods, and the dens are asked to bring the following:

Tigers - Cookies / Finger Deserts
Wolves - Cookies / Finger Deserts
Bears - Cold Sides / Salads (Cole Slaw, Potato Salad, Pasta Salad, etc.)
Webelos - Hot Sides (Baked Beans, Mashed Potatos, etc.)

Everything else will be taken care of! There will be lots of fun activities and games, so bring the whole family. Be sure that all scouts are in Class A/Field Uniform (Blue/Khaki).

If you have question, let your Den leader know.

Popcorn Sale 2009 is Coming

Hello Parents and Scouts.

Our annual Trails End Popcorn Sale is will be kicking off in September! As most of you know, this is our biggest (and usually only) fundraiser for the year, and it's critical for our program. Funds raised from this event pay for awards, pack meals, training, Pinewood Derby cars (and tracks!), Raingutter regatta, more awards, special events, and more.

Last year, we had an amazing year, and I hope we can match that again in 2009. We will be working out the Pack and individual Scout sales goals over the next week or so, and we will have our Popcorn Kickoff Meeting on September 14th.

Here is what I would like all of you to do. Start thinking about locations or events where we can sell popcorn any time between September 19th and October 23rd. Retail stores, special events... anything where there is foot traffic and it is safe and legal for the boys to be selling. If you have an idea, let us know.

Pack Committee Meeting - Thursday, 20 August

Tomorrow night is our Pack Committee Meeting. The meeting will be held at the church, starting at 6:30pm. It will probably run until 8pm. We will be discussing popcorn, recruiting, and the start of the year. All parents and leaders are invited.

Geocaching Event - Sunday, 26 July

Tomorrow afternoon is our last Geocaching event of the summer. We will be meeting at Forest Meadows Park off of Meridian Road (where the tennis courts and baseball diamond is).

From that location, we will head out Miller's Landing Road a short distance to find a few more.

If you don't have an account on Geocaching.com, there are free to create. From there you can see the details for these caches.

We will meet at the Forest Meadows park at 4:30pm and we will be caching for at least an hour. We will be driving to multiple locations along Miller's Landing Road.

Everyone should bring water. Also, if you want to bring small trinkets for trading, that is great. There will be at least one cache that will probably have trade items. We will be walking a some, and in the weeds/underbrush some. Closed toed shoes are a great idea, and long socks may be a good idea as well.
