Pack 112 Parent Handbook

Pack Activities
The Scouts of Pack 112 will generally have one Scouting event each week during the school year. Boys are expected to attend:

  • Den meetings (held every Monday evening during the school year except during holidays)
  • Pack meetings (held on the last Monday evening of each month)
  • As many extra pack activities as possible (see below)

Families are welcome to help and participate in Den and pack events. Please read the section titled "Family Involvement" on page 8 for more information on the role of parents and other family members in the Scouting experience.

Attendance is taken at all scouting events, including pack meetings. Please have all family members, especially scouts & scout buddies, sign in at the beginning of each event. This is important for two reasons: (1) Credit the scout for participation and (2) Use attendance numbers to ensure we have enough supplies for our activities.

Pack 112 rewards those boys that achieve certain attendance levels with the Attendance Pin and Bars for successive years. The attendance level at which this award is presented is determined each year by the Committee. Please check with your den leader regarding this year's requirements.

Traditional Pack activities include the numerous annual events listed below. Additional events may be scheduled as the Pack Committee, Leadership, and parents plan each year.

Month Activity Description
August Kickoff Picnic This is our annual "jump-start" to our program. Boys from all dens get together for a day of fun
Sept - Nov Popcorn Sales This is our annual fundraiser. If the results of this fundraiser are sufficient then we do not have to do another one all year
October Popcorn Sales Continue
November Cub Family Weekend This is a twice-annual council campout which all Cub Scouts and their entire families are strongly encouraged to attend. This is an excellent place to get to know your fellow scouts and their families much better
Road Cleanup This is a major service project for our pack. We maintain the cleanliness of Thornton and Arendale Roads (just east of the Church on Mahan)
Veteran's Day Parade The boys love being in the parade, waving their flags, and swelling with pride in our country and themselves
December Silent Auction We have a party and a silent auction of items donated. The funds raised are given to our chartering organization
Caroling We go to sing Christmas carols and spend some time at a Senior Citizens Center. They love it and so do the boys.
February Blue and Gold This is our annual birthday party for Scouting. It is also the first time during the year (the only other being Graduation) at which the boys may receive the badges for the ranks they have achieved.
Scouting for Food This is a national BSA service project. Working with our brother troop, one weekend we distribute bags and ask folks to fill them with non-perishable foods. The next week we pick up the bags and they are given to one of the local food pantries.
March Pinewood Derby This is the annual race held in either March or April (depending on when the council race is being held). The boys are given a block of wood with wheels and they design, create and race their cars. It's a full afternoon event and the boys love it.
Spring Pack Family Trip Usually scheduled the weekend right before spring break, this trip is a major pack event. We go someplace different and intriguing for the weekend and many families use this as a jumping off point for their spring break vacation. Past trips have included staying on base and eating in the mess hall at the Jacksonville Naval Base complete with a tour of a nuclear submarine, sleeping on the USS Yorktown in Charleston, SC, and a thrilling tour of the Raccoon Mountain Caverns in Chattanooga, TN.
April Start of Packwide Den Meetings
May Graduation Picnic This is our end of year blowout picnic. This is the last opportunity during the year when the boys can receive their rank badges. It's also the time when the boys move up to the next rank.
June - August Summer Activities Pack 112 plans several activities during the summer. We plan these activities so that a couple of things are going on each month and some of them are free or nominally priced. Others cost more. All are voluntary attendance. Any boy that attends 3 summertime activities gets recognized with a pin in the fall. If the pack has at least 50% attendance at one activity each month the pack earns the Summertime award.

As you can see, Pack 112 is a busy pack. We don't require that you attend each and every event but you'll find that Scouting is like everything else in life - you're going to get out of it what you put into it.

Scouting is a year-round program.
