Pack 112 Parent Handbook

Family Involvement

Role of Parents
Scouting is designed to provide opportunities for families to work and play together, to have fun together, and to get to know each other a little better. Parents are an integral part of the Scouting experience. Many of your son's Scout activities will take place in the home. There is even an opportunity for families to earn a Scouting award together (the BSA family award, see below). You also play a big role in the Den. Parents need to attend meetings, not just to help out, but also just to be with your son. Please share your ideas and talents. We will call on you to be involved. Please be receptive to ways that you can help out your son's Den.

Role of Siblings - "Scout Buddies"
We know that it may be difficult for parents to attend meetings without siblings "in tow." Remembering that the meeting is to help the boy learn and grow, we welcome siblings. Please do not expect leaders to baby-sit siblings. Den Leaders plan crafts and activities to suit the Den members present. Please bring things for your other child(ren) to enjoy, and we will do our best to include them in our activities where appropriate.

Parent Volunteers - You and Your Son
Adult volunteers are the essential ingredient in running a quality Cub Scout Pack program. Each parent is expected to volunteer in some capacity in at least one activity. There are many, many needs -- volunteer activities range from planning a specific activity at the Den meeting, coordinating a Pack activity, to leadership in a Pack Committee position. Please contact a Den Leader or member of the Pack Committee to sign up for your volunteer activity or note it on the Family Information Sheet.

Who Runs the Pack
Pack 112, as is all of Scouting, is driven by volunteers. It is the volunteers (parents) who ensure that the pack provides a quality experience for your son. Even if you are not able to serve in a leadership position, all parents are expected to participate in one capacity or another. The earnest effort of all scouts are needed for participation in our major fund raising activity -- selling popcorn. This is our primary source of revenue for maintaining our variety of activities and awards. In addition to assisting your scout in selling popcorn, there are a number of committees for the annual activities that require the help of everyone. Parents are expected to sign up for one or more of these committees when you register your scout.

Some of these committees are:

  • Popcorn committee - Popcorn sale usually runs from September to late October.
  • Silent auction - Auction in December. Planning may start as early as October. Proceeds go to Tallahassee Heights United Methodist (THUMC) Christmas connection.
  • Blue and Gold Banquet - Scouting's birthday. The banquet is in February.
  • Pinewood Derby - Derby will be in March or April - see annual calendar. Planning may begin as early as January. This function requires a number of volunteers for weigh -in committees, racing judges, score keepers, and computer/software managers.
  • Graduation- At the close of the year. Planning may begin around March.
Nothing tells your child you care more than choosing to be with him.

Registration
Pack Leaders and other adult volunteers (Scouters) are required to register with the BSA. A certain number of positions are required to be able to recharter our pack each year. Adult leader registration is paid for by the Pack. Registered adults will receive the bi-monthly "Scouting" magazine, filled with ideas and information. We need registered leaders to help us give our Cub Scouts a quality program, and to continue to earn the National Quality Unit Award!

Training
The Boy Scouts of America offer many training opportunities to Leaders. Some are mandatory; others are optional.

  • Youth Protection Training - All leaders are required to complete Youth Protection Training (YPT). Parents are encouraged to review the course as well. This is a very serious and important part of the BSA program. The Suwannee River Area Council offers the course online at www.suwanneeriver.com.
  • Leader Training - Pack Committee Members, Cubmaster, Den Leaders & Assistance have additional training requirements that will be paid for by the pack. You do not have to pay to be a volunteer!
    • Fast Start Training can be completed online in about 20 minutes. The Suwannee River Area Council also offers this course online at www.suwanneeriver.com.
    • New Leader Essentials is offered during Leader Specific Training. This is offered by the Suwannee River Area Council in the fall and sometimes in the spring.
    • Leader Specific Training is for your specific position (den leader, cubmaster, etc). Once this training is completed (Fast Start and New Leader Essentials are prerequisites) you earn the "Trained" patch. The SRAC often offers this course on the same day as New Leader Essentials.
    • Recurrent Leader Training includes:
      • Monthly Roundtable
      • Pow Wow (in the Spring)
    • Additional Training
      • BALOO (Basic Leader Outdoor Orientation). The pack is required to have 2 BALOO trained persons present at any Pack Campouts.
      • Health & Safety (Guide to Safe Scouting)
      • Safe Swim Defense & Safety Afloat
