From the classic Watermellon Cheer to the newest of applauses ... these are a way to show the presenter, performer, etc. how much you appreciate the entertainment. There are some great ones in here. If you find some other applauses or cheers that we should add to this list please let the webmaster know.


ABE LINCOLN CHEER -- That was great! HONEST!

APPLAUSE AND CHEER -- When leader holds up the right hand, everyone cheers; holds up the left hand everyone claps; both, both!

APPLAUSE FOR FOOD -- Rub stomach and say: "Yum, Yum!"

BALOON APPLAUSE I -- Make a fist. Put the thumb in your mouth and blow. Slowly open fingers to resemble an enlarging balloon. Then flip out hand yelling "Pop!"

BALOON APPLAUSE II -- Put hands to mouth and blow. As you blow, expand hands and then fling them out with a big "Bang!"

BIG HAND WITH FEELING APPLAUSE -- says "Let's give [name] A Big Hand." Everyone holds up one hand with palm out. Then leader says "With feeling" and everyone "feels" with their hand while it's up in the air.

BIG THUMB APPLAUSE -- Hold your hand in front of you, make a fist, hold your thumb up and say :"Great Job!"

BIRD WATCHER CHEER -- Stand. Tuck hands under armpits, flap 3 times while doing the sound of your favorite bird.

BOAT APPLAUSE -- Make motion of rowing boat repeating heave ho. Then sight land and shout Land ahoy!

BRAVO -- The cheer leader says: "That deserves a Bravo ! We'll do this in a circle." He then proceeds to have one end of the circle start with the 'BRR' sound and proceeds to point around the circle while they do the 'AVOOOO' sound. The sound level should rise as more of the circle comes in.

BRAVO ENCORE CHEER -- Divide the room into two. One group says "Bra" and the other "Vo." Point to the groups alternately, varying the speed. Then raise your hands up and everyone says, "Encore!"

BUTTERFLY WITH HICCUPS -- Snap finger as hands flutter around.

CAMERA APPLAUSE -- Aim a camera toward the person or group to be cheered. Say, "You are picture perfect!"

CAN OF APPLAUSE -- Cheer and applaud as you remove the cover from an imaginary can, and then become quiet as the lid is replaced.

CANTALOUPE CHEER -- Like the watermelon cheer, but proportionately smaller. Hold piece of cantaloupe in your hand. Move it across your mouth taking a "short bite" from end to end, turn your head, and spit out the seeds

CAR APPLAUSE -- make motion of turning key in ignition and sound of reving up engine. End with screech for brakes. (Step on brakes)

CAT'S MEOW -- You’re the cats MeeeOOOW!!

CHARGE APPLAUSE -- Line up both fists in front of mouth (your horn), with one fist touching your lips, sing, “Da-da-da-dat-da-dah!”

CLAM -- Put palms together, open and close hands

COMPUTER APPLAUSE -- Turn on your computer and say: "Bee do loop, Bee do loop" Then you punch in some data and say in a very monotone voice, "Does Not Compute, Does Not Compute, Does Not Compute."

DEEP SEA DIVER CHEER -- one hand over head, puff out cheeks and say "blub, blub, blub"

DEN LEADER APPLAUSE -- Shout "C'mon Gold! C'mon Blue! C'mon Cubs! C'mon Through. Chow! Chow! Bow! Wow! (Den Leader's name) Wow! Wow!"

ELEPHANT CHEER -- Let your arms act as a trunk, waving it in front of your face. Then raise your arms up and make trumpeting noises.

FLEA CLAP -- Have everyone raise his hands above his head. Applaud by clicking the nails of the thumb and forefinger of each hand.

FRED FLINTSTONE APPLAUSE -- Shake hands over head and yell "Yabba-dabba-doo!"

FRIENDSHIP APPLAUSE -- Have your neighbor put his left hand out to his side, and you clap it with your right hand; meanwhile you are also holding out your left hand and your other neighbor is clapping with his right hand, etc.

FIRE ENGINE CHEER -- Divide the group into 4 sections: 1) Rings the bell fast, DING; 2) Honks the horn, HONk, HONK, HONK; 3) Sounds the siren, Rrrr, Rrrr, Rrrr; 4) Clangs the clanger, CLANG, CLANG, CLANG. Have all four groups do their parts together.

GIVE A BIG HAND -- Hold out an open palm towards performer.

GIVE A HOOT -- Divide the audience into two sections. Have one section yell, “Give A Hoot!” and the other section yell, ‘Don’t Pollute!” Alternate pointing at each section, pointing faster and faster.

GOOD JOB CHEER -- Divide the room in half. As you point to one side, they say "Good". When you point to the other half of the audience, they say "Job". Vary the speed and the direction you point. Aim for volume.

GRAPE CHEER -- (Just as the Cantaloupe Cheer was a smaller version of the Watermelon Cheer, the Grape Cheer is a smaller version of the Cantaloupe Cheer!) Only need to use one hand!

GHOST CHEER -- Hold up hands as if to scare someone and say 'WHOOOOO-YOU! YOU WERE GREAT!'

HANDKERCHIEF APPLAUSE -- Throw a handkerchief in the air with instructions for the audience to clap and cheer until you catch it or it falls to the floor. Vary the length of the noise, with a long throw, a short throw, and no throw at all.

HAMMER APPLAUSE -- Hold nail in one hand and hammer with other hand, saying “Bang, bang, bang, ouch!” (and shake hand that got hit).

HAY! STRAW! -- Explain that when you call "HAY" or STRAW, the group is to respond with the opposite word. For more fun, mix them up fast.

HOME RUN CHEER -- Simulate swinging a bat at a ball, shade your eyes with your hand and yell (loud) "There She goes!"

ICE CUBE CHEER: Shape an ice cube with a thumb and index finger, saying, "COOOOOOOL!"

JACKHAMMER APPLAUSE -- Hold jackhammer with both hands and begin using it. “Bap-bap-bap-bap-bap!”

KETCHUP BOTTLE -- Slap top of fist with other hand

MOSQUITO -- Rapidly slap face, neck, shoulders, etc.

THE ONE YOU NEVER HEARD -- Fake a clap but miss at the last moment

OCEAN APPLAUSE -- Best done with a large group; have first row sway from side to side; second row swaying in opposite direction; third row same as first, etc. The have them add sound effect: SWOOSH, SWOOSH, SWOOSH!!

OVEREATER'S APPLAUSE -- Looking uncomfortable, rub stomach and slowly say< "I can't believe I ate the whooole thing."

PIZZA TOSS YELL -- Pat your hands from side to side. Throw the pizza up into the air and yell “MAMA MI-A!”

PLANE APPLAUSE -- Hold imaginary wood plane in hands and plane the wood to the sound of “zzzziiiiiippp!”

POPCORN APPLAUSE -- With one hand closed, cover it with the other hand. Let the closed hand "grow" from under the other hand and then spring the fingers open saying "Pop! Pop! Pop! Pop!"

RAINSTORM I -- Start by gently patting knees alternately to simulate light rain. Increase the noise by switching to hand clapping as the storm reaches it height. With a hand signal, have everyone shout, "boom!" to represent thunder. Gradually decrease the hand clapping and then pat the knees as the storm subsides

RAINSTORM II -- Start clapping with one finger against opposite palm, then 2, 3, 4, 5, and reverse, ending with one finger again

RAINSTORM III -- To simulate rain, have everyone hit one finger of his left hand with one finger of his right hand. Gradually increase the intensity of the storm by increasing the number of fingers hit together. Hold up the desired number of fingers as the signal to increase the intensity of the storm. Decrease the number of fingers tapping as the storm passes.

REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE -- Divide the audience into three sections. Have the first section yell, “Reduce!”, the second section yell, “Reuse!”, and the third section yell, “Recycle!” Alternate pointing at each section, pointing faster and faster.

ROUND OF APPLAUSE -- Clap while moving hands in circular motion

SEAL OF APPROVAL -- Put elbows together, open and close forearms and hands, and bark in a high-pitched "Arf:'

SILENT SCREAM APPLAUSE -- Cup hands over mouth, open mouth and pretend to scream but no sound comes out.

STAMP OF APPROVAL -- Stamp feet on the ground, getting louder and louder.

SUMMER FUN CHEER -- Tell the group when you say "summer" or "fun", they are to say the opposite. Vary the speed you use to see whether they can keep up.

TIGER CUB CHEER -- Do clawing motion with hands and say, "Yipes, stripes - We've got 'em"

TRAIN APPLAUSE -- Tap hand going up arm saying "CHOO CHOO' louder and louder till reaching shoulder then make sound of blowing whistle. WHOO WHOO

WATERMELLON APPLAUSE -- Everyone holds a huge slice of watermelon in their hands. They slurrrrp it into their mouths from one end of the slice to the other. (Move slice across face making slurping sound.) Then they spit out the seeds to the side (raspberries!).

WHAT ARE WE CHEER -- At the beginning of the meeting, tell the audience that anytime during the meeting you say, "What are we?" they are to respond "One big, happy Family".

WOODCUTTER'S APPLAUSE -- Nod your heads, as if asleep, and start cutting the zzz’s.
